The purpose of this position is to teach a diverse population orientation and mobility skills, which allow safe and independent travel to occur. The O&M instructor is an active participant of a transdisciplinary team and evaluates, develops instructional plans, and teaches individuals methods of safe and independent travel at the Montana School for the Deaf and the Blind (MSDB) and in the Great Falls community. In addition, the O&M instructor serves as a resource for parents, community contacts, and other professionals in Montana.

? Evaluates, develops instructional plans, and teaches methods of safe and independent travel.

? Conducts initial and ongoing appropriate assessments/evaluations on each student's O&M needs and skills and the environments for the acquisition, fluency, maintenance, and generalization of skills targeted through the IEP process.

? Develops appropriate goals and objectives or benchmarks for each child receiving O&M services in conjunction with the student if appropriate, the student's parents or legal guardians, and other members of the IEP team.

? Maintains files, reports and other paperwork reporting on individual student progress as part of the IEP process.

? Provides direct instruction for the acquisition of O&M skills to individuals or groups, as appropriate to the skills being taught and as outlined in the IEP.

? Orients and familiarizes students with the MSDB campus, local education agency campuses, jobtraining sites, and the Great Falls community.

? Adapts techniques and strategies to meet the needs of students who have physical, mental or emotional concerns in addition to blindness or visual impairment while continuing to ensure the safety, efficiency, and independence of the student.

? Orders, maintains, adapts, constructs and repairs equipment, including pre-cane devices as necessary. Keeps inventory of all equipment.

? Constructs tactile or auditory maps to meet individual student needs.

? Prescribes non-optical, near optical, distance optical and electronic aids and promotes the correct utilization of these items.

? Performs Functional Vision Evaluations to determine student's visual fields and teaches the use of eccentric viewing techniques.

? Serves as a resource for Outreach and Outreach students, parents, community contacts, and professionals working with children who are visually impaired or blind.

? Consults with public and private organizations and individuals as requested.

? Organizes plans, and presents on Visual Impairment/Blindness and O&M services to colleagues and the public sector

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's or higher degree with emphasis in Orientation and Mobility from an accredited college or university is required. Certification through the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals is required.
