General Description:
As an Orientation and Mobility Specialist at TN School for the Blind, you will provide campus-based orientation and mobility instructional services to blind or visually impaired students, including those with multiple disabilities. You will train students to travel safely and develop functional independence in a variety of environments, while serving as a member of an interdisciplinary team. You will be responsible for the development and implementation of individual education plans (IEPs) and for assessing and evaluating student progress. You will work collaboratively with a team of O&M professionals, ensuring that all students at TSB are provided with high-quality O&M services that meet their individual needs.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct thorough assessments of students’ orientation and mobility skills, including sensory, motor, and cognitive abilities
- Establish realistic and appropriate goals and objectives; design and implement programs for each student’s individual education plan (IEP); evaluate and report on the progress of each student; attend scheduled staff meetings and IEPs; and confer effectively with parents
- Provide instruction in concept development, gross motor skills, visual efficiency skills (with/without aids), pre-cane skills, cane skills, map skills, outdoor/residential travel, semi-business travel, business travel, public transportation, use of low vision devices
- Collaborate effectively with other members of the school-based O&M team
- Work closely with other IEP team members including but not limited to parents/families, related service providers, classroom teachers, administrators
- Maintain accurate and detailed documentation to include lesson notes, student skill advancement, and student progress toward IEP goals
- Assist each student to develop his or her maximum safe travel potential and develop functional independence in a variety of environments
- Transport students to locations in the community using state vehicles for lessons as needed
- Provide in-service training on orientation and mobility to colleagues, staff, and various stakeholders
- Remain current on advancements in orientation and mobility techniques, technologies, best practices, and issues and legal requirements in the field
Minimum Qualifications:
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree with certification as specified by state and federal standards for the teaching position held. Master’s degree in Orientation and Mobility is preferred.
- TN teacher license required (active out-of-state educator licenses must be eligible to obtain TN licensure)
- ACVREP Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) preferred.
- Proven experience working with individuals with visual impairments.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with diverse clients and teams.
- Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
- Ability to adapt teaching methods to meet the unique needs of each client.
- Valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation may be required.
