Job Description 

 

Title: Assistive Technology Instructor 

Supervisor: Director of Rehabilitation 

Job Status: Full Time 

 

Summary: 

 

The Assistive Technology Instructor provides assistive technology instructional services to individuals who are blind or visually impaired. This position's responsibilities include assessing clients’ assistive technology needs and delivering training using various tools, such as screen readers, screen magnification software, Braille displays, Braille note-takers, and mobile devices with tactile, auditory, or enhanced visual outputs.  The AT instructor will provide one-on-one teaching in person, virtually, or in a group setting. 

 

Responsibilities: 

 

  • Competency with assistive technology for the blind or visually impaired, including in-depth knowledge of Jaws, Zoom Text, Fusion, typing programs, MS Office, and Braille input and output devices, including note-takers 

  • Strong fluency in PC applications, smart systems, and iDevices, including Windows, MS Office, Outlook, File Explorer, tablets, and phones? 

  • Experience troubleshooting mainstream and adaptive systems preferred? 

  • A  working knowledge of contracted and non-contracted Braille? 

  • Maintain billing hours in an organized manner; document contact with consumers, keeping accurate and thorough records; develop and submit assessment reports and billing information in a timely manner; write reports on service delivery, including recommendations, bids, and progress reports 

  • Ability to lift, transport, and set up computer systems? 

  • Effective and professional communication, both orally and in writing, to meet the needs of the organization and its customers, including effective listening skills? 

  • Good organizational skills? 

  • Good judgment and sensitivity in interpersonal relations among diverse groups of individuals? 

  • Takes initiative, can function autonomously, and be dependable? 

  • Evaluate new assistive technologies as they are developed and make recommendations 

  • Can assess programs and web pages for accessibility 

 

Job Qualifications: 

  • Significant experience with adaptive technologies utilized by the blind and visually impaired 

  • Proficient in using Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Explorer and other software applications 

  • Fluency in smartphone technologies for the blind and visually impaired 

  • Comfort working one-on-one with individuals and in small groups 

  • Clear verbal communication skills 

Requirements: 

 

  • A Bachelor's Degree in computer science or a similar field or relevant work experience in assistive technology and/or computer training required 

  • JAWS and ZoomText certifications are preferred 

  • Experience with visually impaired people is preferred 

  • Strong oral and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, and organizational skills 

  • Strong attention to detail 

  • Works effectively with minimal supervision and is a team player 

  • Ability to work with confidential information both verbally and written 

  • Travel to and from worksites independently  

 

Clearances Required/Need to Obtain: 

 

  • Act 151 (Child Abuse History Clearance) 

  • Act 34 (Pennsylvania Access to Criminal History Clearance) 

  • Act 114 (Federal Criminal History Record Clearance) 

 

Physical Demands:   

  • Activities require a significant amount of sitting in an office in front of a computer monitor, including using a keyboard and mouse extensively  

  • Ability to speak professionally on the phone or in person with various stakeholders   

  • Ability to utilize a visually based database  

  • Responsibility to lift and /or carrying supplies up to 25 Pounds without assistance   

 

Reasoning Abilities & Language Skills:  

  • Strong oral and written communication skills  

  • Ability to interpret and apply understanding to carry out a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form 

  • Ability to follow and execute directives from leadership 

  • Ability to solve problems and deal with various situations  

  • Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.  

  • Evaluate trends in assistive technology, data, or information.  

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret both internal and external documents
